What is reconciliation?

Here are some common types of reconciliation:

  1. Bank reconciliation - The process of comparing a company's bank account records to its internal financial records to ensure they match and identify any discrepancies. This involves reconciling cash balances, deposits, withdrawals, fees, etc.
  2. Account reconciliation - Comparing the balances of various general ledger accounts to account statements, sub-ledgers, or other sources. This ensures the accounts are accurate and identified any errors. Common accounts reconciled are accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, fixed assets, etc.
